Yerevan Physics Institute (YerPhI) was founded in 1942 by brothers Abraham Alikhanov and Artem Alikhanyan as a branch of Yerevan State University. In 1943, YerPhI acquired the status of the Physics Institute within the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR․Later on, two cosmic ray stations were set on Mount Aragats: Aragats (3200m) and Nor Amberd (2000m). In 1963, YerPhI was under the governance of the State Committee of the Atomic Energy of the Soviet Union.
